MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Columbia No. 1 Fire Department shall be protecting the lives and property of the citizens and visitors of the Borough of Columbia and neighboring communities from the ravishes of fire and other disasters through public safety education, the extinguishment of fires, and providing to its customers an organization of men and women which they can depend and feel proud.  Our objective shall be accomplished by upholding the professional image of the department by providing and maintaining suitable quarters, equipment and apparatus and promoting the spirit of good fellowship among its members  for said purposes.

Details from Chief 7-5  (HESS)
Dispatched 03:29 for reported dwelling to 40 West Main Street. Chief 75 arrives fire showing 1st floor side Alpha. Verified all occupants out of fire building and attached exposure building on the Delta side. Fire now self vented Bravo/ Charlie corner 1st floor. E751 arrives has water source off the Alpha/ Bravo corner. Stretches two hand lines, one to protect the exposures second starts fire attack. E751 is able to quickly darken fire on first floor but it has already made it to the second and the attic. Truck 75 sets up off the Alpha/ Bravo Corner and does truck work. Consisting of opening up and assisting the engine company. Truck 74 arrives and sets up on the Alpha/ Delta corner assisting truck 75. E711-1 arrives E751 crew is spent. E711-1 takes E751 assignment on the interior 1st floor.
E752 arrives limited crew with 2nd water source if needed and crew assists where needed. Officer becomes suppression, firefighter adds to E751 crew and driver assists at command. Suppression states bulk of fire knocked with extension to Bravo exposure roofline. Command calls for 2nd alarm. Truck 75 and 74 has building laddered and roof vented and windows out. Crews are spent. E711-2 secures 3rd water source and is set up on Charlie side taking care of Bravo exposure. Truck 81 arrives and goes to Bravo exposure. Truck 26 arrives and takes over truck functions in fire building. E74-2 arrives and takes over interior engine work in fire building. E710-1, E79-2 , E719-1 assist with the fire building. R79 replaces R84-1 in RIT and R84-1 goes to work in fire building. Command adds 2 additional engines and a truck. Crews are unable to rehab fast enough for operation going on. These were brought into the scene from stand-by assignments. Truck 67 finishes exposure overhaul. Engines 76-2 and D88 assist with overhaul and final extinguishment. R66 for air assisting R84-1.

Later in the day the departments Water Emergency Team was added to assist the Washington Boro brothers with the reported water rescue.  Squad 1 and Boat 2 responded OFC.

Day started at 04:34 for the Chief 8-1 with the assist to the police department .  Chief Ryno handled the incident in the 300 block of Chestnut St.  At 07:43 the Class II MVA was dispatched in the first due with 8-1 Engine due.  Engine en route OFC with FF Weber in the seat.  Chief 8-1 Ryno on the scene with two vehicle MVA patients still in the vehicle.  Engine arrived and assisted EMS with patient removal then went available.  At 16:12 the 8-1 Tower was on the AFA High Occupancy in the 8-7 first due.  Tower Ladder en route OFC with Deputy Chief Felus in the seat.  Chief 8-1 (Ryno) on the scene with a one story extended care facility normal conditions.  malfunctioning alarm system, all units available.  At 20:16 the 8-1 Tower was due to assist the Marietta Fire Company (7-10) on the reported AFA in the Borough.  Chief 7-10 (Shirman) on the scene with a malfunctioning alarm system holding to 7-10 units, Tower ladder available.

EXTRA ALARMS IN YORK MOVES THE TOWER

A fast moving fire at a tattoo shop in West York (York County) quickly advanced to 2 alarms today taxing the departments in York.  At 12:34 as the fire escalated and more special service units were placed in service, the Tower Ladder from 8-1 was requested to transfer to York County Station 89.  8-1 Tower Ladder en route OFC with FF Nye in the seat.  Tower remained on stand by for Springettsbury while there personnel operated at the extra alarm.  Earlier in the morning the day started at 05:47 with the Engine run to West Hempfield for the Class III MVA.  Engine en route OFC.  Engine arrived with Chief 7-6 (Ney) to find a one vehicle MVA, holding to the first engine.

This evening as strong storms moved through the county, Team 8-1 went to work first with the Water Emergency Team then with the 8-1 Tower Ladder.  At 16:17 the Rawlinsville (5-8) water rescue box was dispatched for the report of two children in the water in the area of the Norman Wood Bridge.  Squad and Boats en route OFC with Chief Ryno in the seat.  En route Rawlinsville command recalled the units, advising patients on shore, 8-1 available.  After returning a lightning strike with numerous other incidents in East Donegal put the 8-1 Tower Ladder on the street moving North.  Tower arrived and was instructed to go in service checking the roof for fire from a lightning strike.  Crews operated for a short time then moved to East Donegal Fire Station 7-9 to stand by while there units handled numerous other responses.

EXTRA ALARMS IN EAST DONEGAL PUTS THE TOWER TO WORK

In the late afternoon hours Truck 8-1 was due as part of the 1st alarm assignment to East Donegal Township to assist Station 7-9 on a reported Building Fire. Truck 8-1 enroute with 5 and Assistant Chief DeJesus in the seat with LCWC now advising a FF on the scene reporting heavy fire showing with explosions. Engine 7-9-2 arrived to a single family stand alone dwelling with heavy fire showing from the garage and rapidly spreading to the house. Based on the report the incident was upgraded to a 2nd alarm bringing Engine 8-1-1 with a staffing of 7 and FF M. Anderson in the seat. Truck 8-1 arrived and positioned on the A/B corner as requested by Command for possible master stream operations with Truck 7-5 already positioned on side A. Crews assisted with laddering the building, pulling ceilings and performing overhaul and then salvage operations. After the bulk of the incident was complete Engine 8-1-1 returned and Truck 8-1 repositioned to assist the State Police Fire Marshal with aerial photos. Through team effort and a well coordinated attack from the first in engine (7-9-2) an excellent stop was made on this well advanced fire. Thank you to all involved.

The Officers and Members of the Columbia No. 1 Fire Department, the Columbia Quick Response Service and the Central PA Blood Bank would like to thank all the donors who came out this morning and supported the blood drive at the Columbia No. 1 Fire Department Headquarters. At approximately 19:01 hours the East Donegal Township water rescue box was dispatched for the reported swimmer who is missing. Deputy 7-9 (Mohr) enroute with the report from LCWC being a middle age male in boxers who was last seen three hours ago attempting to swim across the Susquehanna river. Squad 1 and Boat 2 enroute OFC with Chief Ryno in the seat. Enroute Chief 41 (Smeltzer) advised subject is on the York County shore, placing all units available. "TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS"

"FIVE POINTZ FIRE" COVERS WRIGHTSVILLE FIRE WORKS

The much talked about "Five Pointz Fire" came together tonight in Wrightsville Borough to cover the Wrightsville Fire Works display. Team 8-1 led by Chief Ryno with the Engine and Tower Ladder stood-by in Wrightsville till approximately 22:00. Day started with the the 8-1 Tower Ladder due on the AFA in Lower Windsor assisting York 44 (Craley). Saturday evening the Columbia No. 1 Fire Department will staff the 8-1 House for the Columbia Fire Works display. "FIVE POINTZ FIRE TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS"

The officers and members of the Columbia No. 1 Fire Department would like to extend congratulations to Firefighter Michael Anderson for being chosen as the "Firefighter Spotlight" article for July for the department and the Columbia Ledger. Mike started his career in the fire service at the Columbia No. 1 Fire Department as a junior firefighter in 1987. Mike currently holds the position of President of the Department on the executive side and Firefighter/Driver on the firefighting side. Mike is a certified EMT and enjoys fishing and having fun with his kids Devon and Seth. Please join the department in extending our congratulations to Mike. "TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS"

At 08:21 Lancaster County Wide Communications received a call for report of smoke coming from the top floor of a three story apartment house, dispatching the first alarm assignment. Chief 8-1 (Ryno) on the scene with a three story in middle of the row apartment house with normal conditions from the exterior with an odor of something burning in the area. Chief 8-1 with the command holding 1 and 1 to emergency response with the additional non emergency level one. Upon investigation crews found a stove fire reported out with minor extension. At 22:27 the Fire Box 3860 was dispatched in the Columbia No. 1 Fire Department first due, fire reported Front & Bridge St., a rubbish fire near a building. Chief 8-1 (Ryno) on the scene with a small fire near a building recalling the second engine, bringing the 8-1 Engine in non emergency. Engine arrived and extinguished a small fire. Earlier in the week, the 8-1 Engine responded on the 3860 Box to the 200 Block of Locust St. at around the same time for a reported dumpster fire. "TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS"

TEAM WORK COVERS MULTIPLE EVENTS THIS WEEKEND

Team members joined this weekend to cover multiple events where the services of the Columbia No. 1 Fire Department were requested. On Saturday evening 17 team members met at the station to cover numerous events in the community and neighboring community's. Under the direction of Assistant Chief Dejesus the 8-1 Tower Ladder loaded OFC and headed to Marietta to assist the Maytown East Donegal Township Fire Department (7-9) with covering the annual fire works. Under the direction of FF Montalvo Sr., Squad 2 headed to Marietta OFC and met with the Marietta Pioneer Fire Company (7-10). Squad 2 crew used Boat 7-10 and covered water rescue incidents for the Marietta Pioneer Fire Company while there members covered the fireworks. Squad 1, Boat 2 and the 8-1 Ranger under the direction of Chief Ryno headed to the River Park OFC and stood-by for the annual burning of the bridge. The Columbia No. 1 Fire Department assisted the West Hempfield Fire & Rescue Company providing safety for the event. Boats from Susquehanna and Washington Boro also assisted. Five team members also stayed at the station to cover the departments Bingo Program. While covering the events Team 8-1 dumped the station for the reported building fire in the 8-4 first due. Reported to be a gas station. Chief 8-1 (Ryno) on the scene with the command. Small electrical fire in the panel, handled by first arriving engine, 8-1 available. SIX TO START THE WEEKEND

The Columbia No. 1 Fire Department had a busy start to the weekend starting at 02:56 with the Commercial ADT on the Hallam (21) Fire Box. Tower Ladder recalled prior to response. At 04:50 the Tower Ladder was back on the road heading West for the residential ADT on the 41 (Wrightsville Box), 8-1 Tower recalled. At 09:09 the 8-1 Tower stayed in the county and headed East to assist the Mountville (7-15) brothers with the ADT nursing home. 8-1 Tower recalled by the 7-15 command prior to arrival. At 17:26 the first of three back to back runs was dispatched for the Columbia No. 1 Fire Department. First incident was for the unknown injury MVA with the West Hemfpield Fire & Rescue brothers. Engine en route OFC with Assistant Chief Dejesus in the seat. Upon arrival Deputy 7-6 (Carter) advised he can handle with the 7-6 Rescue placing the 8-1 Engine available for the next response. Next incident reported on Rt. 30. 8-1 Engine en route OFC. Engine arrived to be advised by the police department they can go available. As the Engine was going available, the Water Emergency Team was dispatched to the River Park for the reported boater in distress. Squad 8-1 and Boat 2 en route OFC. Deputy 8-1 (Felus) on the scene River Park with the West Hempfield Command till there arrival, Deputy 7-6 (Carter) with the river operations. At 14:23 the 2624 Fire Box was dispatched for the reported woods fire on Upper Bear Island on the Susquehanna River in Martic Township. Engine 5-8-2 on the scene with approximately 2 acres of an island on fire. Boat 8-1 added to assist. Boat 8-1-2 and Squad 2 en route OFC. Boat arrived and provided safety around the island while units operated. While on the incident the 8-1 Tower-Ladder took the Hallam Township Tour starting at 16:18 with Industrial ADT on the 41 (Wrightsville) Box. Chief 41 (Smeltzer) on the scene with a false alarm recalling the Tower Ladder while enroute. At 21:35 the Commercial ADT was dispatched on the 21 (Hallam) Box. Tower ladder enroute OFC with Deputy Chief Felus in the seat. 8-1 Tower arrived and level one staged, then was released by the 21 Command (Dube). Boat crews made it back to Columbia at 01:30 after being released by the Rawlinsville Command (Strickler). Thank you to all members who staffed the boats in Martic Township. At 18:20 the 3860 Box produced one of two MVA's the 8-1 Engine responded too in the next 10 minutes. Incident reported Third & Chestnut St. two vehicle MVA PD on scene with minor fluid leakage. Engine en route OFC. Engine arrived to find two vehicle MVA with minor fluid leakage, crews applied oil dry then went available. Right as the Engine was going available LCWC dispatched the MVA involving a tractor trailer on Rt. 30 on the Inter-County Bridge. 8-1 Engine on the street already en route OFC. Engine arrived to find a two tractor trailer MVA with major fuel leakage with complete blocking of Rt. 30. Captain 7-6 (Knisely) arrived and set up the West Hempfield command with Chief 8-1 (Ryno) assuming the operations. Over the next four hours numerous agencies including Haz-Mat from York and Lancaster County, DEP, and police department handled the scene clean-up. Approximately 50 gallons of diesel fuel entered the Susquehanna before the leak was controlled. "TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS"
